    Plato – Philosopher
    Albert Einstein – Physicist
    Ralph Waldo Emerson – Poet
    JP Morgan – First Billionaire
    Robert Heinlein – Best-selling Author
    Hippocrates- Father of Medicine
    DH Lawrence – Author
    Louis Pasteur – Scientist
    Pythagoras – Mathematician
Benjamin Franklin – A Founding Father of America
Donald Reagan – Formerly Ronald Reagan’s Chief of Staff

    Raymond Domenech, French soccer coach

    Author Paul Kiritsis

    Just a few.

**The links below the second list of people lead to direct quotes attributed to those individuals that support their use of astrology.

“Supporting accuracy” would mean leaving ones statements at “I don’t know” (because that is an accurate statement) and not adding the “I seriously doubt” part.

    And the question wasn’t :

“Try to debunk all the other answers to this question, even when I don’t have other supporting evidence except “I say so and have a list of books at the end of my post.”

    The question was:

“What famous people utilize (or utilized) astrology?” **

I agree with Irish, except that she left out the Pope, who has his own astrologers. Were you aware the entire zodiac is tiled on the floor of the Vatican? And that you can watch the sun go thru each house of the zodiac?
Hitler, by the way, had his own astologers. The only way we were able to outguess him and win the war was to employ our own; the few that were lucky enough to escape **** Germany worked for the US..

I think the above list needs a little clarification. What we now call “astrology” is more correctly known as “horoscopic astrology” and it began in Greece somewhere in the 1st and second centuries BC. This means Plato (c 428 - 348) and Hippocrates (c. 460-370 BC) would never have seen a horoscope or knew much about the “signs.” It is possible they were exposed to or familiar with Babylonian astrology which is not the horoscopic astrology I believe the question pertains to. That kind of astrology had more to do with omens than charts.

I seriously doubt Albert Einstein ever bothered with it, but he may have been asked about it now and then.

Since the previous Pope, John Paul II specifically criticized those who use astrology in lieu of traditional Catholic teaching, I kind of doubt the current Pope has an astrologer. There are zodiacs in the Vatican, but the Vatican is quite old and zodiacs are common in Renaissance art as are other references to astrology. But it is true that some popes consulted with astrologers in the middle ages and Renaissance. Other popes condemned it. Then there is the oft told tale of the Vatican’s extensive astrology book collection in its library. The library, which is not open to the general public, has all sorts of books as does every library and it would be surprising if there were not some pretty good astrology works there. However, to take the leap that the presence of Renaissance astrology texts in the Vatican library means that Popes are all closet astrologers or have access to them is silly.

Nancy Reagan used the services of astrologer Joan Quigly for her own scheduling and sometimes that of her husband. Occasionally the President followed her advice. As for the President, while he did deny it, long before Nancy Reagan’s use of astrology became public, astrologer Debbie Kempton Smith asserted that Ronald Reagan did in fact use astrology and she claimed, without documentation sadly, that Reagan gave out different birth times to throw off potential astrologers, a common practice in previous ages. Over 50 birth times have been suggested for President Ronald Reagan.

To skip back a few generations, American Astrologer Evangeline Adams claimed to advise financier J.P Morgan, but Morgan’s family, long after his death, denied it. Morgan is credited with one of those quotes that cannot be documented: “Millionaires don’t use astrologers; billionaires do.”

Adams claims to have numbered among her clients not only Morgan, but the great tenor Enrico Caruso as well as other leading lights of the pre and post WW I era. I don’t believe Adams’ records exist (although her library does in tact) so these claims cannot be documented beyond what she wrote and since she only named names of those who had passed, we won’t know of any others she may have advised. Adams died in 1932.

Franklin wrote “Poor Richard’s Almanac” and it had astrological advice as did all almanacs of the day. Almanacs became popular in England about 100 years before Poor Richard’s as literacy rates (slowly) rose. Old Moore’s is about the best known and may still be published. The level of astrology varied from publication to publication. But by the mid 18th century the level of astrology in Almanacs was almost uniformly low and only the lower classes read them. I’ve never seen a reproduction of Poor Richard’s so I don’t know if the level of astrology is higher or lower than what was typical of the mid 18th century in the colonies. There wasn’t much astrology in the US until after the mid 19th century. As for Franklin himself, I’ve read where he was a practitioner and that he wasn’t. Who knows?

I was told by a guy who knew the astrologer who claimed that Yoko Ono made frequent use of his services before her husband was murdered. It is also fairly standard that well established astrologers claim famous people as part of their clientele, but of course, they cannot reveal their names. I’ve never been impressed with those stories.

Finally famed author Jack London (1876 - 1916) has an interesting link to astrology. London was born in San Francisco illegitimately to one Flora Wellman who claimed the father was one William Chaney, a man usually described as an itinerant astrologer, but who was also known to have taught college level mathematics. Chaney, a heavy drinker, brawler, military deserter and all around ne’er do well always denied Jack was his son, but according to one source London had a strong physical resemblance to Chaney. Chaney, despite his perpetual impoverishment, was an important figure in the history of American astrology, but that takes us elsewhere. London himself was not known to have taken up astrology during his short life.

This is an interesting question, but due to the stigma attached it’s probably a good bet that far more famous people use astrologers than we will ever know.

Edit: Donald Regan (name misspelled at the Blue Moon link above) did not practice or use astrology. He was fired from the White House Staff and revealed Nancy Reagan’s use of astrology as part of his revenge. The quote attributed to him may or may not be accurate, but in no way can be used to indicate even an interest in astrology by him. The other quotes at that site are dubious as well. None are documented. The oft repeated Newton quote has no original source, either.

I’m not a skeptic, but I prefer accuracy to supportive, but inaccurate data.

Edit 2: Five TDs? LOL I love it. Is it that nonsense is preferable to the truth?

Others have already named many who use or used astrology. I’m pretty sure the Magi wise men did, since Magi were astrologers. Whether a person believes in God or not, I do think the event surrounding the story actually happened.

I don’t know what final conclusions Newton, Kepler, Copernicus and Galileo finally came to, but I have great respect for the fact that they chose to study it completely on their own, rather than arrive at the “Cliff Notes for Pseudointellectual Skeptics” conclusions of others.

I know that Newton’s alleged opinions vary from what source you read. I was at a lecture at Stanford where the professor who spoke had a book on this subject. The book was written by one of Newton’s friends who had spoken at his funeral service. The friend stated that he was dismayed that persons chose to take what they wanted of Newton’s massive studies and materials, but leave the rest behind. He said they all knew that Newton was an unusual man with unusual interests. He remarked that many persons preferred to pretend that Newton did not have those unusual interests. When Newton’s boxes of writings were opened, it was said that some persons observing were ashamed of the astrology, alchemy and religions writings. The friend said that those who truly loved the man were those who loved and accepted both sides of who he was.

After that lecture, I couldn’t help but wonder if in Newton’s writings, certain papers were kept, but the other ones which were deemed too unusual were discarded. Newton was a learned theologian, by the way.
